The right roof insulation is important

Not insulated roofs are an immense heat leak at the house. There are various possibilities for the energetic renovation of the attic. The shape of the insulation depends on several factors.

A well-insulated roof is worthwhile not only in the winter by a reduction in the heating costs, but it insulates the house even against the summer heat. In addition, modern insulation materials can also improve sound and fire protection. For many house owners, the energy costs are of course the focus. In this case, up to 30 percent of the heating heat can be lost through an uninsulated roof. For example, in the regulation on energy-saving heat protection and energy-saving plant technology for buildings (including the German Energy Saving Ordinance or EnEV), a retrofit requirement for the insulation of the roof or the top floor covering has been established for houses which changed owner after January 2002.

In principle, there are three types of thermal insulation on the roof: the sub-rafter, intermediate rafter and rafter insulation. The last variant is normally only suitable for a complete roof restoration, ie. If the house is to receive a new cover. This makes this form of insulation particularly efficient as it requires no heat bridges.

Particularly fast and easy is the retrospective thermal insulation with the under-floor insulation. This is applied from the inside to the roof racks and can be used as a cladding, depending on the system. The disadvantage of this method is the increased space requirement. If the attic is to be used as a living space, the intermediate parking insulation is recommended. With this thermal insulation, however, a fairing has to be added.

If, however, the space under the roof is not intended as living space, there is also the possibility to insulate the attic or the top floor. This is by far the simplest and most cost-effective method of heat insulation in the roof area.
